Buy MS OFfice again- just because hardware conked out?

K

KV2020

Bought a dell laptop for $1500 two years back and the poorly built laptop has
conked out. Went ahead and bought a new Gateway laptop and tried to install
the MSOffice Basic that came with my dell and I am told by Microsoft that I
have to purchase office software again for the new computer! Why would I want
to pay again for the same software just because the hardware died out?

Think I might turn into one of those open source Open Office fans in a short
while...

The MS Office that came with your Dell was OEM software as part of the Dell
bundle. It was tied to the computer and can't be transferred to another
computer.

Because it's not transferable. That's a big reason why you paid less for it
than if you'd gone to your local software vendor and purchased a retail
version.

You paid significantly less to use that software under a limited set of
conditions. If you want to change the conditions, you need to buy the
appropriate license.
