Calendar and Contact Upgrade Issues with SP2

Chris

Hi all-

I just upgraded to SP2. I have several personal e-mail accounts and an
Exchange account all configured in Entourage. Prior to the upgrade, all of
my Address Book and Calendar entries were successfully synchronized between
my Exchange account and my local Entourage client identity (I only have one
Entourage identity).

Having upgraded to SP2, I noticed the following issues:

(1) My local Entourage calendar is now completely empty. All of my
calendar entries are still in my Exchange calendar, but it seems that my
local calendar data has been entirely deleted.
(2) The same is largely true with my address book. With the exception of a
few group lists and, curiously, my own address book entry, all other address
book items have been deleted.

All else appears normal (inbox, drafts, etc.)

Anyone else have the same issues? Can anyone help me understand what might
have happened? I'm not always connected to the net, so the apparent
deletion of my local Entourage calendar and address book data is upsetting.
Forcing synchronization between my Entourage client and my Exchange account
has not been successful.

I see this too - kinda confusing...
I think it must be them taking us back to the way it was with 2001(?)
The odd thing is that you can't delete those local calendar and contacts
folders, which would eliminate some confusion.

Ahh. So you're saying that the local Calendar and Address Book folders are
redundant because we can view the Exchange folders locally? Interesting. I
don't think I was prepared for a paradigm shift of that sort.

Let me just say this: I *am* thrilled with the content of the SP2 release.
I am, as Scott has suggested, confused about the Entourage Exchange updates.
Further insights would be appreciated.

It would be interesting to setup a new account with SP2 and see if those are
still there.
I love the update, but find myself a tad confused ;)

Do you mean you have all your contacts and calendar entreis but they're
all in the Exchange calendar and address book ??? If yes, I beliee it is
"intended behavior".
I perfectly see the point for people sharing their Exchange items but as
far as I am concerned, this scheme has hige drawbacks and I quickly
moved everything back in th "On my computer". This meant losing all the
advantages of Exchange synching of calendar and AB, but I was happier
with that than with the default setup :-|
Keeping both is a realpain since then all entries appear duplicated in
e-mails for auto-completion of addresses or in the calendar for
reminders.

Corentin-

Yes, all of the calendar and contact items (with the exceptions cited in my
original note) are all in the Exchange calendar and address book.

I suppose I might be able to live with this, but what happens if I no longer
use the Exchange account? Will my contacts and calendar itesm automatically
move back to my local Entourage folders? Or do they go bye-bye?

Also, how did you move all of the items back to your local folders? A big
copy/paste operation of some sort?

I suspect you'd lose them all :-> I would definitively move them back on
the On my computer before disabling Exchange.

Somehow. There is a move command. I can't remember like that where it
"lives" but the shortcut is "command-m".
You have to be extra careful with contacts and calendar on Excahnge
since Exchange doesn't sync grous, there is a serious risk of losing
group attributions... I moved my contacts around a couple of times and
lost them all :-(

I also ran into difficulties with the Excahnge server. It appears that
when you make a lot of modifications to the address book (I had over 600
contacts there) then the comunication must time out at some point trying
to sync with Exchange and Entourage asks youfor yourpassword every two
second. Most annoying... I ended-up booting up a PC, launching Outlook
to trash all my contacts inExchange (so that it would match my now empty
Excahgne Entourage address book) to get it back to normal. Tedious....
(though it might depend on the settings on your Exchange server - ours
is a pain).

No, not 2001. Most Exchange users apparently want to segregate their work
items (in Exchange) form personal items (On My Computer). The new system
facilitates that.

For those who want to keep everything together in one place (especially if
you Palm sync - which only works with local calendar and address book, or my
Sync scripts, which do the same), I will be releasing a free script soon
that copies events and contacts from the Exchange calendar and address book
to local, or vice versa. Either all items or just selected items, as you
wish.

This is fantastic, Paul! This has been bothering me ever since the upgrade.
So, will this be a sync or a copy? Meaning, will I have to do it manually,
or will it automatically copy my exchange calendar events to my computer
events? I need to see it all in one place (that's what I was used to) and
also need it to sync to my Palm (exchange and local) and if it did it
automatically in the background, it would be MUCH better than doing it every
time I synced.
