Calendar and My Day

A

Andre Rowe

I¹m a new Entourage user and I went with it so I could have all Email,
Calendar, Contacts, ... Everything in one program. The issues that I am
having are:

1) Whenever I move to the calendar portion of Entourage, I get an error
stating that ³Microsoft Database has encountered a problem and needs to
close². I send the report to Microsoft and then I can access the calendar,
but I cannot make an entry on the calendar. I have checked the database and
have even went and deleted it and started a new one. The problem just
started up again.

2) My Day has the same problems. Whenever I click on the My Day button I
get an error and I have to have the database daemon restart. But it stays
in that loop it never breaks out of it unless I tell it not to start My Day.

Any help with these two issues would be great because Entourage is a good
product and I want to be able to make the most out of it. Especially since
I¹ve paid money for it.

I found more information about the database daemon error I keep getting. Here
is what the log says:

Quit Entourage and any other Office apps. Then, Run Activity Monitor and
check to see if there are multiple copies of the Database Daemon running. If
so, use Activity Monitor's Quit Process button to Force Quit the daemon
processes.

Go into System Preferences, User Accounts, unlock, and look at your Login
Items for your account. Delete all entries for "Database Daemon" (Entourage
will create a new one the next time you run it.)

Relaunch Entourage. Try your calendar now. Still having Problems?

Most of us can¹t read logs, it¹s takes a developer to really understand
these things so don¹t feel bad. I do see a lot of framework errors. This
indicates your install is bad. Also the application in the log is >
Application Name: Microsoft Database Daemon.

It's pretty common to get multiple daemons in the Startup Items. Go to
System Preferences and select Accounts under System. Open Accounts and you
will see two tabs: Password and Login Items. Select Login Items. Look for
multiple Microsoft Database daemons. If you have more than one, delete all
and Entourage will automatically make a new one when launched.

The daemon is also known as Notifications (2004) and/or Reminders (2008).
You must quit the daemon whenever you update Office or switch Identities.

If the multiple daemon fix is not your problem that takes us back to your
install. It would be helpful to know what OS you are using. Tiger or
Leopard????

Since Office 2008 doesn't have any updates this fix below won't help. You
would need to use "Remove Office" and re-install.

If you receive a framework error, re-apply recent updates. A framework error
normally means one or more components of Office have not been updated
correctly and are now out of synch with other bits.

Let me know what you find and we can go from there to get you working

Thanks for the tip. I thought it was working because I could actually make
a calendar entry. But after I did that an then went into the Notes section
and then back to Calendar the error reoccurred again. Also the My Day just
keeps coming back. Do have any other suggestions?

Where can I find a copy of "Remove Office" so I can reinstall Office 2008
for Mac. Also I am running Office 2008 on Leopard 10.5.1.

I found the Remove Office tool and used it. It removed preference files and
put them in Trash. I then tried to reinstall Office 2008 but the error
still returns.

Then I thought I should use Remove Office again and make sure the database
was removed from Login Items. Even after doing all of that I continue to
get the errors.

How can I completely uninstall Office 2008, so I can completely reinstall
it? Maybe that would solve the problems.

"Remove Office" is the complete removal tool. I'm thinking it's your system
files that we need to address. That's what the framework error is
indicating. You haven't mentioned if you are in Tiger or Leopard. When you
run the Apple stand alone updaters they will overwrite files that could be
corrupted.

Fix for Tiger:
Combo updaters will install on the same version as they¹re applying‹no need
to roll back or do a clean install.

Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update (PPC)

Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update (Intel)

Leopard Fix:

There is no combo updater for Leopard yet, but running the 10.5.1 updater
might fix your problem. If no you will need to do an "Archive & Install".

If you have Leopard, did you do a "clean" install (erase the HD and import
your docs with Migration Assistant at the initial restart after
installation), or did you upgrade over Tiger with all user accounts
remaining in place on the HD?

There are 3 types of installs:

1. Upgrade Mac OS X (the default upgrade method)*
2. Archive and Install
3. Erase and Install

So I'm going to have to delete reload my entire Leopard and all of my files.
There has got to be a better way. I just bought this MBP about a month ago
so it has to have been a clean install. So to correct this issue I'm going
to have to erase my hard drive and reinstall everything.

My suggestion first mentioned running the standalone updater. This might fix
your problems. Since you had not included any details about your install, I
described what the different installs would do in hopes it would help you
know what to do next.

I suggest downloading the 10.5.1 updater from Apple's site and run it. This
might fix your problem. Even though you have a new MB, it's no guarantee
that things have become corrupted. This is where an "Archive & Install"
would help. If you aren't familiar with an "Archive & Install", it will save
your old system folder and install a new one. This is almost as good as an
"Erase & Install".

Diane,

Looks like I had to do the clean install option. I made sure I backed up
all of my important items but the calendar and My Day appear to be working
now. Although it appears to have created another problem.

I'll create another post about that though. It has to deal with Microsoft
Sync Services.

Thanks again though.,
