Can access mail server only once

I have a pop account that I can send/receive mail when I first launch
Entourage. All subsequent attempts are met with "Could not retrieve
mail from the account..." (error -11568). If I relaunch Entourage it
works again (once) and all subsequent attempts fail again.

I have setup the same account using Apple's mail and everything works
fine.

Very frustrating....

What version of Entourage do you have ?? Is ti up to date ??

I installed [Microsoft Exchange Update for Entourage X (Office v. X
10.1.4 Update)] and received the same results.

I checked and -11568 is not in the list of known error codes :-\ I
wonder what might be wrong. It could well be that the server has its own
way to run POP that Entourage doesn't deal well with. Nevertheless I
don;t understand why you can connect only once per launch :-\

Is it a work ISP POP server or your home ISP ??

Its a work server.

SO there is no real reason why it would not be available anymore. It's a
little difficult to trouble shoot without nowing exactly what the error
message is but my guess would be that the communication with the server
is not closed properly once the app finishes downloading mail. When you
quit Entourage, the app re-sends a "quit" command to the server just in
case. That explains why you can connect again when you re-launch the app
(since this time the POP session has been properly closed.

This would be either a bug in Entourage (now working properly with this
spoecific implementation of the POP server) or due to an outdated
version of your POP server. Any chance you could contact the IT people
at work and ask them to check that the POP server is up to date ???
