Can Entourage display newsgroup messages in threads like outlook express?
It is real frustrating trying to navigate busy newsgroups when you can not
view message threads. Is there a way to have Entourage do this?
Thanks
Josh

This works pretty well for me...

Do a custom arrangement.

Group items by SUBJECT.

Sort groups by Sent Newest on Top

Sort within groups by Sent Oldest on Top

Default display for Groups Expanded.

I call it NewsArray.

Hope this helps.

Best,

- Bill

By the way, I urge you not to post your real email address on newsgroups.

I haven't used Entourage as newsreader for a while since it can't (or at
least couldn't then) sort threads chronologically. Instead, I use
Thunderbird for newsgroups and Ent as regular mail client, calender,
etc, i.e. the things it does best.

But there's another very valid reason for NOT using the same application
for newsgroups as you do for regular e-mailing: On a regular basis I see
posts to newsgroups made by people who by mistake send them there,
firmly believing that they sent a normal mail to a person or an
organization. A few of them pretty embarrassing on behalf of the sender
and some downright dangerous when explicit business secrets has been
revealed for the entire world to read.

So, be safe. Make sure you're not posting your annual subscription
request for Guys in Leather to your favorite newsgroup: Use two
applications.

Unfortunately threading by reference and threading by conversation is not
available in Entourage. That is what allows you to have threads with
multiple levels, so that you can see which message in a thread is in reply
to which. It's an often requested feature. Your request here should be
recorded. Alternatively, you can send feedback using the web form. In
Entourage X or 2004, go to Help > Send Feedback on Entourage. Otherwise,
click on this direct link to enter Mac Product Feedback:
<http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp>

In the meantime, I use a custom arrangement to group threads for mailing
lists and newsgroups. It's not ideal because messages with subject changes
aren't grouped and threading does not indent to show which messages are
replies to which. Here's the custom arrangement I use:

I've set up a custom arrangement (View > Arrange By > Edit Custom
Arrangements). It looks like this:

Group items by: Subject
Sort groups by: Sent Newest on Top
Sort items within groups by: Sent Oldest on Top
Default display for groups: Expanded

I can then order any folder or newsgroup that way by opening it and then
going to View > Arrange By > My Custom Arrangement (right below the Edit
Custom Arrangements item). It sounds like you definitely want items grouped
by subject. You then have flexibility as to how you want to subject groups
ordered (the second option), and how you want the items within each group
sorted (the third option). Explore the options to see what works best for
you, save it, and then apply it to a folder.
