can I ignore root certificate error?

Forgive me if this is a stupid question - but I'm new to using both
Entourage and Exchange.

Is it safe for me to just keep ignoring the error I get about not having a
root certificate installed when I launch Entourage 2004? I don't want to
compromise my mac, but I'm not sure what this certificate does? I don't
remember having to install a certificate on my PC when I set that up to use
my Exchange account - (but maybe I did?!)

Thanks.

Without installing the certificate, you won;t be sure that you are
securely connected to the proper server (though the chances are slim you
are actually connected to another one).
The best way is of course to get the certificate from your network
administrator and add it to the x509 anchor (I believe there is a
tutorial about that on somewhere on http://entourage/mvps.org/ if you
have no idea what I am talking about - basically, you double click the
certificate, the keychain comes up and asks you where you wamnt to
import it. Select the X.509 anchor in the list).

There are ways to get the certificate even if the administrator doesn't
provide it to you. The OmniWeb help had something pretty nice about this
and I have a copy here for online access (and translation in other
languages): http://www.cortig.net/wordpress/?p=32

if you are on Tiger use Safari to access Outlook for Web Access. The
will be a message about the certificate. From memory, there is a
disclosure triangle which when clicked will display information,
including a check box for trusting certificates from this source.
Clicking on it will install the details into your keychain. From then
on, you won't have that message appearing in Entourage.

The details above might not be exact. I am trying to remember what
happened but wasn't really paying attention to the detail when I was
doing it. Just happy that it worked.
