Can I run Mac Office X and Office 2004 together?

Hi

I currently have an academic license for Office 2004 but will need to
use Office for commercial use soon. I have the opportunity to get a
copy of Office X at a very good price. Is it possible to install this
software alongside my Office 2004 installation to evaluate without
disturbing my Office 2004 installation?

Thanks in advance,
Adam

Hi Adam,
first of all, I should tell you that you posted in the wrong newsgroup (sort
of). While this one here is also related to Mac Office, it deals in
particular with Entourage; next time, simply post in
microsoft.public.mac.office. That being said, yes, Office v.X and 2004 (or
any other Office version, for that matter) can peacefully coexist on one
hard disk. Only remember that Office 2004 is more advanced than Office v.X,
so if you heavily rely on the new features introduced in 2004 (long file
names, Unicode support, etc.), you'll be more or less disappointed with v.X.
Also, Entourage 2004 uses a new database format, so its database won't be
compatible with Entourage v.X.

and make sure you're not running the Office X notifications, otherwise
you'll end up with the daemon version X running alongside with the 2004
and they don't cohabit so well.

Hi Michel

Sorry about the misposting, It was the differences between the versions
of Entourage that was on my mind when I made the post.

Cheers

ALSO!

We've found that using Word v.X with Entourage 2004 produces a bug in
the Mac OS. You can generate this, quite readily, by attempting to copy
text from an E2004 mail message and pasting it in to a Word v. X
window. Using Word 2004 does not generate the bug.

Of course, we don't see why we should spring for a bunch of Office 2004
licences, just because MS only shipped a decent Exchange client with
Office 2004... (we're already covered for Exchange clients see?).

So, while you can -yes you can- use the two alongside each other, I
have to ask the question WHY would you put yourself through that pain?
