can send email but am not synchronizing to exchange server

I have days of trouble trying to connect to the exchange server (just
started working for a large government body (abc.net.au). I was always
able to see the contacts on the LDAP server but couldn't do anything
else. After trying copious amounts of server configurations I stumbled
upon being able to send email, however, i still don't get email.
I tried on a PC/Outlook and it all works fine. I read the KB here
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884988/en-us) and as IT doesn't
support macs I wonder what system info I need to get off them in order
to make it work?
What scenario is in play when I can send email but can't get email.
thanks

Hi daniel!

Sounds like you've got your Entourage configured to connect to your
Exchange Server as a POP/SMTP client rather than an Exchange client.
Your SMTP server for sending mail is correct but your POP settings are
still wrong somewhere.

I suggest you try to connect as an Exchange client instead so that you
get as much as you can from your server such as calendaring and
contacts. Have a look at this page on The Entourage Help Page
<http://entourage.mvps.org/exchange/exchangeatwork.html>.

If you need help determining your correct Exchange Servers go to a
Windows machine and log in. While Outlook is running hold the Control
key -while- you also right-click the Outlook icon in the System Tray
near the clock. You'll see a contextual menu item about your server
"status". Select that and you'll see your servers.

Hope this helps! bill

Thanks William
It's actually been solved now and it had very little to do with
entourage. The link you provided was what I had followed to the letter
with still no luck. For future reference for anyone else experiencing
this problem the solution may be in your OSX network settings. For me,
it was a matter of entering domains into the "Bypass proxy settings
for these Hosts & Domains:" The domains, in my case, related to the
network I am connecting to. The set-up administrator obviously didn't
know about putting this info in.
thanks for your reply - this issue would have been a hard one to solve
through entourage!

Thanks for the information, daniel! If I understand the resolution
properly I assume your Exchange Server is in a different internal domain
from your Mac, correct? This is assuming your Mac receives its domain
information from your DHCP server.
