Cannot Access a Subform's Form Properties When in Development Mode

For some reason, suddenly I can no longer click on the little box in the
upper left hand corner of an open form and access the form's properties (eg
the properies at the form level). That little box has disappeared from all
forms.

I can get to the properties by selecting "Form" from the drop down in the
tool bar, but this does not work for subforms.

Is there a setting somewhere to reinstate the box so I can access the form's
properties.
