Cannot exit Office 2003 apps, red x is grayed out

I upgraded to Office 2003 from Office 2000 and now when I open Word, Excel,
etc, the red X in the top right corner is grayed out so I can't exit out of
the programs except by going to File-->Exit.

Is there a fix. I guess I could uninstall /reinstall but if there's a quick
fix I'd like to know as I have quite a few machines with this problem.

Try hitting the Save button first.

Yes, and it still doesn't work. I have a fresh install of Office 2003 on
other computers (no upgrade) and when you launch any of the office programs
I'm able to just click the red X.
