Cannot open main file after compact of database

I tried to delete a number of mail files, then closed Entourage, and
re-opened it with the option to compact the database. When the compact
was completed, I reopened Entourage and found I was looking at the last
Entourage backup of my database, which was last January. I still have
the main database file, in the main identity file folder, but no matter
what I do, only the backup file opens. I have checked the "modified"
date on both the backup database and the main database, and it confirms
that the backup is the database Entourage is using.

How to I force Entourage to "let go" of the backup database, and open
the main database?

Try Entourage>Switch Identity (or hit Option+Cmd+Q). You should see a list
which contains both identities; select the one you need, and things will be
back to normal.
