Cannot Receive Email from Exchange 2007

Email Client: imap

I have upgraded from Entourage 2004 and have imported my previous Identity. Can establish a connection with the Exchange 2007 server and OWA works just fine. I have 6000+ messages on the Server and when Entourage starts trying to Receive Email Messages, it just sits there and eventually times out. I presume this has to do with the size of my Inbox on the Server, but looking for a solution other than having to delete my inbox via OWA.

Are you really connecting via IMAP and not as an Exchange client?

"Connecting Entourage to an Exchange Server at work"

"Connecting Entourage to an Exchange Server from Home"

Entourage doesn't have any limit on how many messages you can have in
your Inbox or any other folder, however, if it doesn't get a response
from your server in a certain amount of time then it may just think the
server is not responding. The server may not be responding in a timely
manner if you do have folders (especially your Inbox) with large amounts
of messages.

If you haven't already, break up your messages into smaller groups using
folders. Do *not* put sub-folders in the Inbox but instead put them at
the same level as your Inbox. You *can* have sub-folders in folders but
I don't suggest nesting too deeply.

Hope this helps!

Yes, I've confirmed that I'm connecting via IMAP. I connect from home in the UK to a server in Calgary. The account is set up as IMAP. Though I did try to set up an Exchange Client via our VPN network, but that didn't seem to work any better and I would rather not have to connect via VPN.

I'll try breaking down the messages into Folders... though with 6000 messages to go through, that could be painful.

Do you think this might have anything to do with the 'Legacy App' support not being configured/installed on the Exchange 2007 Server?

Also, I tried connecting to the 2007 Server from Entourage 2004 and that wouldn't receive the messages either, though it was receiving messages from our prior Exchange 2003 Server without any problems.

Bill - I managed to reduce my Inbox to 100 unread messages and put all the rest into another massively large folder... interestingly, as you predicted... it seems able to receive the messages now.

I presume this means that the Server was NOT responding in a timely manner when I had 6000 messages in my inbox.

So, It's not a fun workaround, but I guess I'll just move them over in chunks by moving them from my massive folder to the Inbox around 100 at a time. Let me know if you have any better ideas.

I greatly appreciate the feedback. Knowing that this somewhat resolves
your problem will help others.

Both IMAP and Exchange connections are "synchronization" connections
rather than download and delete connections. The Inbox is synchronized
more frequently and therefore should be kept as small as possible.

The legacy application support you mentioned will only apply if you're
connecting as an Exchange client rather than an IMAP client. You should
still, I believe, be able to connect to your server as an Exchange
client (and take advantage of calendar and contacts support) if you
follow the instructions I provided earlier for "Connecting from home".
This may be a better alternative for you.

Hope this helps!
