cannot sort by this field in outlook 2003

Care to provide some information? The view and the field seem like a good
place to start along with what you thought should happen that isn't.

i click into contacts. when i click the categories field in the gray toolbar
i receive that error

Of course. That makes perfect sense. Category sort is meaningless and
impossible, since any contact may be listed
under multiple categories.

Just a smidge more....

on the Advanced Toolbar, use the Group By box to Group by Category - or just
change to that View - By Category.
