Cannot start Database Utility

Burt

I need some help. I'm trying to rebuild my Entourage database but I can't
seem get the database utility to start/open. I've followed the steps listed
in the Microsoft support Knowledge base; close all applications, hold down
the Option key and open Entourage. Instead of getting the database utility
window Entourage opens normally. I've tried several different times even
holding both Option keys but I can never get the database utility. Any
thoughts on what I can do to open the database utility?
Thanks
Brent

You need to keep holding down the option key until Entourage is fully
started up.

Alternatively, the database utility can be started up by double-clicking it
in the /Applications/Office 2004/Office/ folder (if you are using Office
2004).

Barry,
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately it still didn't work; I held down the
Option key for a good 60 secs after Entourage opened. Again I followed the
previously discussed steps. I'm using Entourage X with Mac OS X (10.4.8).
I've contacted Microsoft but all they want is more money to help to solve my
problem with their application.
Thanks

Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or
If it's your User's folder that contains the problem.

Follow the troubleshooting steps here:

Diane,
Great thought! I was able to open the database utility under a different
User. I followed the troubleshooting steps according to the link you
provided to try and correct my User account. So far nothing has worked
including Permission repair, deleting the com.microsoft.xxx.plist files. I
still can't get the database utility to open under my User. I was able to
copy my database file to another user and run the Typical rebuild from
there. That result, the database file went from 199MB to 110MB. However,
now I can't open my database file under my User. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Burt

Try applying the Apple combo updater.Doing so overwrites potentially
problem-causing files. Several users have reported this fixed some odd
problems they were having with Entourage.

The combo update installer updates Mac OS X 10.4, 10.4.1, 10.4.2, 10.4.3,
10.4.4, 10.4.5, 10.4.6, 10.4.7, or 10.4.8 to 10.4.9.

Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update (PPC)

Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update (Intel)

If this doesn't work, try an Archive & Install of the OS. If that doesn't
work then you will need to wipe your drive and reinstall.

What concerns me is this problem might go deeper than just your database
utility not working. It could be hiding there doing damage to other parts of
your User.
