Can't access database issue with Entourage 2004

Greetings,

I'm hping that someone might be able to assist me. I recently
purchased a 12' G4 Powerbook and transfered the files from a G4 eMac
into it. My wife and I both have accounts on the machine. I have no
trouble opening Entourage on my account but when trying to open
Entourage on my wife's account I get the error "Can't access database".
It suggests re-building the database and then shuts downs and opens
the database utility program. I have re-built the database but that
does not seem to help.

I have removed the Microsoft User Directory and preferences and, even
though it creates new ones, it still says it cannot access the
database. The original database is still on the eMac and is working
fine so it does not appear to be a case of corruption.

I am using Mac OS x.4.5 on both machines and it is Entourage 2004
11.2.1 on both machines. I have done a re-install of Office on the
laptop. I have tried a straight copy from the eMac to the laptop as
well as using Cronosync for the transfer.

Has anyone else run across this problem and does anyone have any
suggestions on how to fix it?

Check permissions to be sure everything transferred over correctly.

Are you switching Identities in Entourage or do you have separate Users set
up in the Finder?

Did you place both Identities in the Office 2004 Identities folder? Look
over the directions for moving from one computer to another to see if there
was something you might have missed.

You might need to export the data and import into a new Identity in
Entourage.

It sounds like there might be permissions problems on your wife's user
folder or some subfolder.

First try selecting her ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2004
Identities/Main Identity/Database file, do a get Info, check Permissions. It
should say Read & Write. If not, change it. If it doesn't let you, click the
triangle "Details", make sure that your wife's username is listed as Owner,
then change to Read & Write. (If the main identity name has been changed,
the folder will have the changed name too.)

That should fix it, but the problem might be on a folder further up the
chain. Since you're in Tiger (this doesn't work in Panther), and since
_everything_ in the user folder should be Read & Write, I'd go right up to
the Home (username) folder, set that to Read & Write, then click "Apply to
enclosed items" at bottom of Details. (Or you could move up folder by
folder, but why not do it all at once? I'm sure you'll need to do it for the
Main Identity folder, at any rate.)
