Can't apply a design template to selected slide

As Echo says if you dont select a slide this command will be greyed out (but
visible).

if you cant see it at all are you using the little drop down menu to the
right of the design thumbnail?

Yes, a slide is selected, but the only choices are "Apply to all slides",
"Use for all new presentations", and "Show Large Previews"

Perhaps that could explain it; I'm using PowerPoint 2003, Student-Teacher
Edition.

It's odd, I use this feature on the job with no problem, and I am pretty
sure we have Office 2003 Professional, but I could be mistaken.
