Can't attach anything when sending an HTML-format word doc-why?

In a Word.doc, when I select "File:Send to:Mail Recipient (As HTML)", the
resulting email opens in Entourage, ready to be sent, but Entourage does not
allow me to attach anything to that email. It would be nice to know if
there's a good reason for this, or whether I'm just doing something wrong.

Because attaching anything would mean Entourage has to edit the message, and
entourage does not have a complex html editor (that's why the ability to use
word was added).

I can't find any way to select Word as my email editor, in Entourage - where
did they hide it? Entourage help doesn't seem to provide a clue either.

In office 2004 you can create a word doc, then in WORD, select 'send to >
Mail Recipient (as HTML)' from the file menu.

Try this. It may not work for all cases but it does in some. Prepare your
document in Word. Select File/Send to/Recipient (As HTML). In Entourage, add
the recipient and subject. Then SAVE it, not send it. It will be saved to
your Drafts folder.

Now open a New Message and set it to be HTML (click the "abab" button if
your mail default is plain text). Remove the signature. Drag in the saved
HTML message from Drafts folder to be an attachment. Drag in your other
attachment. Now send.

Depending on what your document contains, this may appear just about as you
intend at the other end. If it contains just formatted text and graphics, it
will appear as a standard message except that it will have "From: To: Date:"
etc headers at the top. It will also have the attachment you wanted to send.

Send it to yourself first as a test and see if it works well.

OK, after some testing, it turns out this looks like a deficiency of Word
for Macintosh versus Word for Windows: even though the ability to use Word
as a complex HTML editor was added in Word for Mac, they forgot to let you
attach anything to the Word-edited HTML message.

In Word for Windows 2003, if you have a Word.doc and select SendTo, an email
editing window opens up IN WORD, showing your HTML message, and allowing you
to click the paper clip icon and attach something to the HTML message.

In Word for Mac 2004, as soon as you click SendTO, the HTML message goes
directly to Entourage, which greys out all attachment options. There is
never an option, while in Word, to attach anything to the HTML message...as
far as I can see.

That is correct, and Œas designed¹.

Entourage does not have a complex HTML editing engine, and it is impossible
to attach anything without editing the source in some way. Therefore word
docs sent as HTML can be viewed, but not modified.
