Can't connect to Exchange 2003 Server using VPN

Hello,

I can connect to our Exchange server using our OWA server without running
the VPN client. When I¹m on the VPN client, I can¹t directly connect to the
server using the full address or the IP address, although I can ping both.
Entourage seems to be more or less ignoring the VPN connection.

When connected via the OWA server is the experience as reliable as when
directly connected to the exchange server via VPN? I¹ve noticed on a couple
of occasions that Entourage stops delivering mail for 30 minutes or so, if
the app is minimized or in the background. Any guidance on how to get
Entourage to recognize the VPN would be very appreciated.

Entourage cannot ignore the internal OS X VPN facility ‹ if you¹re using
that, Entourage will be operating over the VPN. I am not familiar enough
with 3rd party VPN clients to know whether Entourage would work or not work
under them.

I have had problems previously where the VPN connection¹s proxy information
was interfering with my ability to connect to internal servers. In effect, I
would VPN into the corporate network, only to have the proxy information
tell me to talk to the proxy server, which would then try to connect back
outside the corporate network. I would check the System
Preferences/Network/VPN (PPTP)¹s TCP/IP and Proxy tabs to make sure they are
set up correctly: right search domains, right proxies, right proxy
exceptions.

When connected to the server directly, I believe more than simply working in
a polling mode, we receive notifications that a folder has received new
mail. If we¹re operating under that assumption, I¹m not sure we do any
polling, so if the subscription lapses on the server, or the subscriptions
responses aren¹t making it to the client, we may not report new mail in a
timely fashion. (This is a little bit out of my area, so this may not be
perfectly accurate.)

Thanks for your suggestions. I¹ll check out the Proxy info. I¹m connecting
using Cisco¹s VPN client for tiger.
