Can't delete email messages from Exchange server

Mac OSX 10.3.x all latest downloads
MS office for Mac 2004 Entourage all latest mdownloads
Connect to Exchange Server at work for work emails.

I am unable to flag a message to "delete from server at next
connection" in any of the server mailboxes.

The function works beacuse I also use POP accounts 'on my computer" for
personal mail and when you do this a small red icon appears next to the
server icon and it does what is says.

If I move a message from the "server" inbox to a mailbox "on my
computer" it still will not flag message or " delete from server at
next connection".

I would be grateful for any help. as I cannot see that there is a
perference to set this.

is this a function of the Exchange server software ? or a setting in
the exchange server ?

You help would be appreciated as I have to continually manage my server
mailbox as it fills up on a regular basis.
