Can't delete Newsgroup messages

Hansa

I am using MS Entourage and MS Outlook Express for accessing
Newsgroups, but I seem to be accumulating Newsgroup messages and I
can't delete them. I have tried to set up various Schedules and Rules
under TOOLS, but nothing seems to work. The messages date clear back
into December 2004. I don't know if any or all are still on the
server. But no matter what I try, I keep adding more and more
messages, read and unread.
What is the problem and how can I solve it and get back to just
opening messages of the day?
I am using Mac OS 9.2 for MSOutlook Express and Mac OS 10.3 for
Entourage on my Apple Power PC G4 computer.

Hi Hans!

Newsgroup messages aren't like email messages. You don't need to delete
them because you want your newsreader to be able to know what you've
already read.

Rather than trying to delete them, select each newsgroup that you've
subscribed to and hide them. In Entourage you'll choose "View --> Unread
Only". This will actually work for mail as well as newsgroup but it's
especially handy for newsgroups.

Look for a similar function in Outlook Express.

Hope this helps! bill

Newsgroup messages are 'online' messages, that are stored on the news
server. A local copy is retained in Entourage so you can still read them
again after you disconnect. They can't be deleted individually (it's just
the way news works). However, when messages are cycled off the server
(frequency of deletion varies depending on the particular server you are
connected to) they will also be deleted from your local cache. The size will
not, therefore, grow without limit, but will reach a standard size and then
stay there.

You can clear the cache from any or all of your news servers by
Control-clicking the news server icon in the Folder List and then selecting
"Empty Cache" from the contextual menu.
