Can't drag emails from one folder to another

My husband's MacPro seems to love generating odd issues. Today it decided that it would no longer allow Entourage emails to be dragged, singly or in combination, from one folder to another. It's as if the folders were locked in some way. I have the same model of computer, and my Entourage is normal. There doesn't even seem to be a setting that would cause this "locking" to happen.

An additional odd point is that if you do highlight more than one email (using either Shift or Command), as soon as you click on any highlighted line, all the others de-highlight.

I don't know if it's related, but for several days the computer has been refusing to hold a menu in Excel or Photoshop once it is clicked. In order to get at a sub-command, you have to slide down the menu and directly over to the sub-command. If you release the mouse, the menu disappears.

This issue with Entourage just started up today. If anyone can suggest a possible cause or better yet, a fix, I would deeply appreciate it!

From what you describe there seems to be other issues here that need to be
addressed. Be sure you have a backup in case the drive is failing.

Have you checked to see how full the drive is? You need a minimum of 10%
free.

Steps to help determine where the problem is located. ( I suggest you go
directly to a new User, step 2 since you are having other issues.)

1) you can eliminate your Identity by creating a new Identity in Entourage
and see if you experience the same problem.

2) if a new Identity still exhibits the same issues, then create a new User
in System Preferences and test the problems in the new clean environment.

3) If the problems still exist in the new User, it's a problem with your
Office install or your base OS files. If running the Apple combo does not
fix, then you might need to do an "Archive & Install".

These may sound simplistic but often the simple solutions are overlooked.

Does your husband ever restart his MacBook Pro? Many laptop users will
simply close the lid and leave things running. A restart often cures a
world of hurt.

Also, check for stuck keys. Part of the problem sounds like you may have
a stuck Command or Shift key.

Hope this helps!

Troubleshooting Basics
May 2, 2009

Hi, Diane,

Thank you for your suggestions. I tried the new identity, but the problem persisted. I then did "repair permissions" and the Apple Combo update. It's now working properly - messages drag from one folder to another, and menus stay in place when clicked. My husband is very pleased, since he spends several hours a day using the computer for business, and I'm most grateful for your help.

Hi, Bill,

Thanks for your suggestions. I will keep in mind the point about the stuck Command or Shift key, though it doesn't seem to have been the cause this time. I appreciate your help.
