Can't edit PPT Graph (error msg: "server application, source file,

Hi,

I have Office Ppt 2003 SP2 and XP Home v5.1 and keep getting this message as
described in http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00236.htm

- I don't have Norton (am running AVG but still get the message when it is
disabled though haven;t tried the whole repeated disable/ turn off/ turn on
thing)
- I don't have officeav.dll
- Tried re-registering
- Tried saving to my desktop
- Tried to stay calm and avoid keyboard violence

Any help really appreciated

Did you try reregistering Graph as described in the FAQ?

Hi Echo

Yes I did. The re-registering worked but I'm still left with the same
problem on the graph editing.
I have a similar set up on my laptop (apart from ZoneAlarm whereas this PC
using Sunbelt Kerio) and have the same difficulties.
Bizarrely, this doesn't affect all charts in the presentation (just most of
them) even though they look similar.

Help!

Ah. In that case, the charts may well have been created in an application
that isn't available. I see this fairly often on charts in files I receive
from clients. They use Prism or SPSS or SPS or whatever that other major
graphing program I can't remember right this minute is (!!), and yeah, those
will throw errors such as what you're seeing because I don't have those
programs installed on this system. Can you find out where those specific
charts came from?

They may also have used Edit|Paste Special to paste just an image of an
Excel chart onto the slide. No, wait, that would opent he picture editing
dialog. Nevermind.

Hmm, the person who's done the charting for me has adapted a previous
presentation but has just been using PowerPoint. They work on his basic home
set-up mac and on a corporate PC. Knowing something about the way this file
was created I can't imagine they've (knowingly) used SPSS or any other
graphing program. Could this be an XP thing? It seems to be the only variable
between our systems. I wonder about the Mac connection as well...I think the
original may have been created on a mac, my file has been adapted on a mac
and there is something about the corporate platform that can cope with it?

Hi Steve,

I wish they did provide mini-bars. I would really like to empty one right
now. I've got Excel but MSGraph - should I try and install this from
somewhere?

When I look in Properties > Contents I see 3 embedded OLE servers: MS Graph
Chart, MS Graph 97 Chart and MS Graph 2000 chart. This looks suspect but I
feel irrationality getting the better of me.

Hm. If the charts work on his home system and on another corporate system,
they *should* work on yours, especially since I'm only seeing various flavors
of MS Graph in your OLE server list.

Are you up to date with all Office service packs?

I wonder if the latest Windows XP service pack fiascos could be affecting
your charts?

I see you mentioned saving to your desktop. Try saving the file to your C
drive and working on it from there.

Good and bad.

I also tried downloading all the optional XP updates (I'm set to automatic
for the essential ones and all up to date).

Any other ideas...?

Just tried it on another laptop, also running Office 2003 on XP and have the
same problem. I'm up to date with all the SPs and tried working on it when
saved to my c:.
I'm very proud that I've not managed to swear in this forum. So far.

Personally, I'm thinking it might be time to call Microsoft. I'm seriously
wondering if one of the recent Windows XP updates is causing the issue. They
had one a couple of weeks ago that's caused all kinds of problems. So you
might try uninstalling update 908531. Do that through control
panel/add-remove programs. There's a box you'll need to check at the top of
that dialog to "show updates."

Hopefully Steve will have some other ideas.

Hi,

I tried uninstalling this and still no joy.
I guess the only thing left now is to go back and try all the workarounds a
second time...?
My gut feel is that there is some mac-pc incompatibility on xp/ office 2003
but it just isn't consistent. I could send through one slide with 3 charts on
it where two of them work for me and one doesn't...?

Got the files and finally some time to play with them. As I mentioned in
my
email, I'm seeing the same thing here; the "problem child" is editable in
a
"pure" Office 2000 system but on a system with Office 2003 installed, I
can't
edit it in either PPT 2003 or 2000.

Well, poop. That's not supposed to happen!

It made sense to me, at least the bit about not being able to edit in
either
PPT version on a machine with both installed. There can only be one
MSGraph
version and the newest one wins.

But why would using the newest one make the graph uneditable?
