Can't get Entourage 2004 to provide notification when I get an e-mail

I have Office for Mac 2004. I recently transferred my Office for Mac X
via firewire to my new iBook with Office for Mac 2004 already
installed. In the process, I lost the ability to receive notification
via sound and to my desktop when new e-mail arrives (this is in
Entourage). So far, Microsoft support is not solving the problem. I
removed the previous version (Mac X) from my new iBook's hard drive but
I still can't get notification. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

What sort of email service are you using?

We experience a very similar problem with Entourage 2004 when accessing mail
via IMAP from a Novell GroupWise 6.5 service.

Has anyone else seen this problem?

Did you check your preferences? Do you hear system sounds?

Under General Preferences->Notifications, when you click on the sound icon
do you hear the sound?

David: I don't know if this answers your question, but I am an
individual user with a Comcast broadband connection. I have been in
touch with a Microsoft tech via e-mail over several days and he has
still not resolved the problem.

Diane: Yes, my Notifications (in Preferences) are set to notify me on
my Desktop and my sounds are working. Any other thoughts?

'notify' has nothing to do with sounds.

First check that in entourage prefs, under the notification pane, you have a
sound set selected (default to 'Microsoft sound set'), and have a check
mark next to 'new mail sound'.

I have tried the "Remove Office" routine [that DIANE ROSS suggested]
but the process has not gone the way she said it would (I have not been
asked for my CD key, etc.). In fact, I have run the "Remove Office" at
least 4-5 times so far, and the following is what happens:

1) I am offered the option of removing all or some of the following:
Office 98, Office 2001, Office X (including Test Drive) and Office 2004
(including Test Drive).
2) I go through each step to remove each of the above (98, 2001, X and
2004).
3) No "Rescued Items" folder appears on my Desktop, as it says it will
during the "Remove Office" process.
4) I DO get a "Remove Office log.txt" doc. The following is what it
contains:

5) I Restart my iBook
6) The trash bin now shows the stuff that has--supposedly--been
removed.
7) I go to "Remove Office" again
8) When I start the "Remove Office" process again, the EXACT SAME
OPTIONS are offered to me again (Remove Office 98, 2001, X (including
Test Drive) and 2004 (including Test Drive).

So...It appears that my "Remove Office" itself is flawed as it doesn't
seem to be removing anything. Or am I hopelessly clueless?

Note: Before I contacted this Group, I contacted Microsoft and a tech
there attempted to assist me with this problem (the original problem:
not receiving e-mail notification on my Desktop from Entourage). The
tech's name is Daniel Gao. Daniel had me do the following:

1) Run the Remove Office utility in the Additional Tools: Remove Office
folder on the Office 2004 for Mac CD-ROM;
2) Select only Microsoft Office 2004 from the Results list;
3) Empty the Trash;
NOTE: If you receive any error messages when you empty the Trash,
repeat this step until you no longer receive any error messages.
4) Restart the computer;
5) Perform a drag-and-drop installation of Office 2004 for Mac.
Q31272: How to remove Office v. X for Mac and Office 2004 for Mac
Standard Edition from your computer

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312172
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312172>

Download and Apply Office 2004 for Mac Service Pack 1
[with instructions about how to do this]

Then Daniel included the following:

NOTE: Since we released Office 2004 SP1, we have received many same
feedbacks. This is an incompatibility between SP1 and Adobe Acrobat v
6.0 (same to 6.02). You can download Adobe 6.0.3 from the link
below.... [I wrote back to Daniel that this didn't apply to me, since
I have Adobe v. 7.0]

Daniel and I have been e-mailing back and forth for several days now.

The last thing he recommended I do was to add a new User Account (see
his e-mailed instructions to me below):

Dear Marsha,

Thanks for your reply. I think your issue is caused by the incorrect
settings in the Mac OS X settings. In this case, please carry out the
instructions in the following article to create a new Mac OS X account
and see if the issue is still persisting in it:

Please perform the suggestions and provide me with the result. I am
looking forward to your response.

Have a great day!

Sincerely,
