can't get proper page numbering

J

JL Hopkins

Hi,

I have working with Word 2002 and am typing a simple document with no
special format of about 45 pages with a few page having columns (2). The
problem is page numbering. There seems to be 35 sections over the 45 pages
and each one wants to restart numbering from 2!

Now I notice the section numbers when I click on VIEW|HEADER AND FOOTER.

I would like to either not have 35 sections or have some type of global
setting so I simply can have the pages numbered from 1-45 with out having to
go to each of the 35 sections and reset them or whatever. Any ideas?

Wherever you change the number of columns, you will have a section break.
When you have a Continuous section in the middle of the page, it's difficult
to access the Format Page Number dialog for that section. There are two ways
to approach this:

1. Insert a temporary page break in the middle of the section, then use the
Format Page Number button on the Header and Footer toolbar.

2. With the insertion point in the middle-of-the-page section, go to Insert
| Page Numbers, click Format..., set the page number to "Continue from
previous section," click OK to close the Format Page Number dialog, and then
be sure to click Close rather than OK to close the Page Numbers dialog (so
that you don't insert a new page number).
