Several suggestions can be found at:

If you are having continual bouncing, you most likely have mail errors
occurring. Check the log file by choosing the menu Window->Error Log, see
what the errors are, and attempt to correct them.

You can turn off the bouncing alert for new mail, but you can't turn it off
for error messages. It's infuriating to a lot of people, and there is no
known fix.

A little utility program available on versiontracker apparently worked for
Ent X, but does not work for 2004. I have already written them asking for an
update, and they have responded thanking me for my suggestion. Since it's
freeware, one can hardly complain, but I do wish they would find time to
address it.

Best,

I strongly advise you to open the Error Log file, however, to see what
Entourage is trying to tell you. Cmd-8 will open it.

I agree with the original poster. This was one of the first things I
asked about some
time ago and was told then also that there's nothing that can be done
about it.
Since every time this happens it's nothing more than that one of my
many email accounts
failed to get new mail from one server or another, NEVER a big deal at
all since it just gets
it at the next schedule. It is quite near infuriating to have to
either watch that
unnecessary bouncing icon or stop what I'm doing to bow to the new
master of my
attention. :) <grin>

I still say that there must be some way to block the "tell" to OS-X
that there is some
catastrophe in the works.
Even if it was something bigger than just missed mail, I still can see
the little exclaimation
icon at the bottom and know that something is there to look at. More
than that is a
major nuisance.

This is annoying, and you should certainly Send Feedback via Help. So many
people ask for a way to turn off error notifications that - even though it's
not very safe - maybe they will provide it if you all ask.

In the meantime, I believe there is some haxie that can turn it off (Dock
Detox, I think). Alternately, if you're driven to desperation, did you ever
think of switching ISPs? I have a primary ISP providing ADSL and a POP
account, plus two other IMAP accounts (one my university, one mac.com) and I
almost never get disconnection errors - mac.com for a couple of hours about
once a month when they're probably doing maintenance, that's all. It's not
actually normal to be getting continual connection errors.

Or just don't check mail automatically. I never do. m.

You're joking, right?

The error messages are always temporary access problems with a mailbox or
server that have no diagnostics attached, or they have impenetrable error
numbers that no one on here has been able to help me with.

I'm sure there might be an error message that is worth reading, but I would
bet a survey would reveal them to be approximate 7% (and I think that's
generous) of the error messages generated.

Yeah. :)

The workarounds are to stop letting Entourage check your mail (which I think
is not on the table. I'll of course stop using the software before decided
to use that one. The whole point is to know when mail arrives.), to take the
silly error messages seriously (yeah, right <g>), to get Dock Detox (which
is the little haxie that doesn't work for Ent2004, but keep monitoring it),
or change ISPs (no no no).

Or maybe put a piece of tape over that part of the screen? :)

Allen -

I answered very hastily before and did not mean to argue against reading
error messages. You're right of course that they should not simply be
ignored.

The problem is that the notification is way (!) too insistent and
distracting. I would be thrilled if an error message appeared when I brought
Entourage to the front. That's plenty. I do not want my work interrupted.

At the same time, I must also check mail very frequently during a business
day.

Options that would be plenty acceptable include: a preference to specify an
interval for sending message alerts, a preference to have alerts appear as
alerts on the desktop or floating (would probably not select that, but I
would prefer it to the bounce, I think... At least I would know what was
happening instead of just LOOKY LOOKY LOOKY LOOKY [wasn't that annoying?]),
no alerts until I check on Entourage by bringing it to the front.

The current setup is just not good. At least, that's my view.

Best,

- Bill
