Can't import Entourage identity

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Power PC
Email Client: pop

My Entourage crashed today, deleting everything in my main identity database. I had made a back up of the identity but apparently the file is corrupt. Is there any other way to access the database? I have tried the 2 back up files that I have and neither have actually imported anything into the program. What would be causing the Identity backups to be corrupt?

Launch Entourage pressing the Option key down to get to the database
utility
You'll be able to fix your database from there,

You can't import from the same version.
