Can't mail out because 'Authentication failed'

Trying to mail out I get "Authentication failed because Entourage doesn't
support any of the available authentication methods."

Error -17897

I reinstalled the whole system and all my applications which fixed the
problem for about 2 days but now it's come back.

I know the server is OK as I can mail out from a laptop, and I haven't
changed any settings since it worked.

I suspect the problem is not with the server and may not even be to do with
Entourage, but Entourage is not happy.

Any ideas?

I'm using Mac OSX 10.3.5 with MS Office 2004 v11.1.0
