Can't move Identiy from Jaguar to Panther

Guy Paul

I have Entourage X on an external drive running Jaguar, and I've tried to
move my Main Identity from it to a fresh copy of Ent. X on my internal
drive which is running Panther. I get the message that, "This version of
Entourage cannot open this Identity", but it's precisely the same version
(loaded from my Office X install disc), only the OS is different. Thanks
for any light you can shed.

Is the applciation up to date on the second computer ?? It might be Office
10.0.0 for instance and you'd require 10.1.5...

The version of the OS shouldn't make the slightest difference,

Thanks for the response, Corentin. The version on my Jaguar disk is
10.1.0. Which I put on the Panther disk. I got the same "this version
cannot open..." message with 10.1, then 10.2, 10.4 and 10.5. Today, I
tried removing and re-installing Entourage, upgrading to 10.5 and then
swapping out my Microsoft User Data folder. Entourage opened up with
the welcome message in the inbox and asked me to set up my account!
I used Get Info on my various caches inside the Identities folder and
they appear to be full. I'm stumped.

Thank you for your response, Courtein (?) I am new to this forum and I
accidentally deleted your reply, sorry.I am new to this forum and I
accidentally deleted your reply, sorry. I have tried to swap my Identity
into versions 10.1, 10.2, 10.4 and 10.5 and each time I get the
message "cannot open this Identity with this version..."

Today I removed, re-installed and completely updated Entourage (to
10.5) before swapping my Microsoft User Data folder from my Jaguar
disk. This time it opened but presented me with the Setup Wizard. My
old Identity was nowhere to be found.

It seems that Panther (and I've tried 10.0 and 10.4) somehow alters the
Identity I try to bring in from my Jaguar disk, either rendering it
unreadable or erasing its contents. When I boot into 10.2.8 the files are
all there; when I boot into 10.3, they're gone. I'm stumped. Any ideas?

Well I'm happy to see that you got your mail back.
Version 10.1 must have had nasty bugs affecting importing mail that next
revisions didn't have. I'm glad you got it to work,

No problem. You can always re-import read mail in many newsgreaders or in
last resort you can look them up through Google:

If the identity is properly placed in the MUD folder, Entourage should "find"
it immediately. If it doesn't, it's either a bug in Entourage or a corruption
in the database. What happens if you ask ENtourage to "switch identities",
does it list the identity you are trying to get back on this Mac ?

I'm not sure I get it... Do you have 10.2.8 and 10.3

Hi Corentin,

Thanks for sticking with me. Yes, I have both OS 10.2.8 and 10.3.

My situation is this: I have my working system and all its files on an
external firewire drive running Jaguar (10.2.8). My internal drive has a
fresh copy of Panther (10.3) and a fresh copy of Entourage (10.0). I've
tried repeatedly to move my Main Identity and/or Microsoft User Data
folder from the external (Jaguar) drive to the internal (Panther) drive.
My goal is to move my entire system from the external (Jaguar) onto
the internal (Panther) drive with fresh copies of all my programs and
files.

If I'm booted into Panther and attempt to access Entourage from my
mounted external drive, I'm also out of luck. Only when I boot into
Jaguar on my external drive do I have access to all my files.

I don't think it's a bug in Entourage or a corrupt database since the
program seems to work fine on my external drive under Jaguar. As I
wrote you, no matter which method I use to move the MUD or the Main
Identity from the external(Jaguar) to the internal(Panther), it doesn't
show up. It's deeply frustrating.

I have tried asking Entourage to switch identities as you suggest, but to
no avail. The (empty) main identity is the only one that shows up.

Dear Courentin,

Success! I must apologize for mistakenly assuming the root level
Documents > Microsoft User Data folder was the one I that contained
my files. I happened to be looking for something else in my User >
Documents folder when I discovered there another Microsoft User Data
folder that proved to be the one I should have swapped into my new
User > Documents folder. I did so and presto, I'm back in business. Do
you think I should leave the other MUD folder in the root level
Documents folder? Thank you so much for your patience and expertise.

Yours,
Guy

:))) Great! back to bisuness then ;-))

well, the one with your data has to be in the MUD folder (in ~/Documents) and
I really don't see why you should keep the other one (unless you have
imported some mail in it in which case I'd export them to re-import it in the
other one).
