Can't open in safe mode

Patrick

My outlook is freezing on opening. I went to open using
Run and adding '/safe' to the command line. I get a
message saying it can't find the command. I tried in and
outside the quotes, as well as other /switches. Same
message. Will open without /switch, but that won't help
me fix the freeze problem. What to do next?

You're probably quoting it wrong then. It should look like this;
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\Outlook.exe" /safe

Yes! I was able to open in safe mode, delete a couple of
junk bits and then it froze. Have run scanpst, done a
repair and still get same result. Can close, open in
cleanviews as well as safe but still have a freeze happen
between thirty seconds to a minute. Only able to hit
close button, and always must do it and close dialogue
box twice.
What else can I tell you?

Three things to try;
-Try disabling individual add-ons in Tools-> Options-> tab Other-> button
Advanced E-mail Options...-> button Add-In Manager.../COM Add-ins...
-Try renaming outcmd.dat to .old and restart Outlook. All the Toolbars will
reset then. This is quite a common problem with Outlook . The default
location for this file is:
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook
-Try recreating the profile in Control Panel-> Mail-> button Show
Profiles...

Yes. Was doing # 4 on your help page- detect and repair -
left it to un overnight. Completed successfully.
My outcmd.dat was in C:\Documents and
Settings\admin\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
instead of the specified- does this matter and how did it
get there?
When I went to restart Outlook after this, it did not
open, and on the second attempt in safe mode it prompted
me to strat detect and repair which is now happening.
Will watch it this time....

The location was a typo by me; sorry for the confussion; I've updated it

It wants you to setup an profile for Outlook. Depending on your Detect and
Repait settings you've probably removed the profile as well. You'll need to
enter the information given by your ISP to configure your account.

Did you create the new profile as Roady suggested? If yes and you get the
problem of Outlook freezing at the startup screen, follow these directions:

Close Outlook. Find and rename outcmd.dat to .old. (If using Windows 2000
or XP, you will need to enable searching hidden and system folders.)

Once you have done so, reopen Outlook and it should open fine. You will
need to rebuild any custom toolbars or customizations as the file outcmd.dat
controls how the toolbars display. When it becomes corrupted, it will cause
Outlook to hang because it cannot create the toolbars that you expect.

Outcmd.dat hasn't been recreated since the last time I
renamed it. When opening after a detect and repair, I
have only seen the select profile window once, and after
selecting the only option it had- outlook- it frooze.
I have redone ScanPst. I have tried opening using
the /cleanPST switch. It always hangs now after opening
the Configure window. I have also tried renaming the
extension on the PST file and the /firstrun switch.
Any other ideas?
Thanks!!

Ok, I have now used the remove and install features in
add & remove programs twice. Once I got into the program,
was able to delete a ton of old mail, trying to clean
things up- and opened and saved some recent messages with
business to attend to.
But then I can't open it twice, and I haven't been able
to get the exact sequence of remove/restore/repair and
detect etc. that will work. I haven't been able to even
think about send/receive.
what can account for such behavior?
Thanks!
Patrick

I have also redone my virus scan, with updated
definitions, deleted all my history and purged my temp
files just in case I was harboring something malicious
there. I have the latest Microsoft updates.
What else is there to be done?

Can't open what twice? Does Outlook work with a clean pst-file? If so then
your current pst-file still holds erros in it. I suggest you archive this
one and start with a clean one.
