Can't open older publisher files

R

Roy Retreat

Began with Publisher 97, then 2002 and now 2003 (Running XP Pro)
Discovered today that I have several files with dates of 1999 that won't
open in publisher 2002 or 2003.

Is there a problem with opening some of these older version publisher files?
Is there a workaround to open them?

And, its also possible that some of these files may have been corrupted in a
backup, or file transfer between disks.

I have the files on several computers and they all generate the "Publisher
cannot open the file" notice.

If you are running Norton anti-virus, try disabling the script blocking.
This is a common cause of your problem.

Had another associated question...
Can Publisher 97, 2002 and 2003 exist compatibly on the same computer?

M

Mary Sauer

Yes, install each version into a separate folder. I have them all on my computer,
they do not conflict.

Thanks for your help in solving this problem. I had already browsed the
threads and found the Norton Script fix, but that wasn't the problem since I
had the same issue on a laptop which wasn't running Norton.

It turns out the problem was caused by older files created by a Publisher 97
or earlier version, and after discovering that the olde publisher programs
can co-exist on the same computer, I reloaded Publisher 97 and was able to
open the stubborn files.

I'm having the same problem, but don't have access to the older versions of
Publisher. The documents were created in 1998-99 - which version was being
used then?

Newer versions should be able to open most older Publisher documents. There was
a security update that affected Publisher 2.0. If you have Norton...

If you installed the service pack there were issues for some users not being
able to open older files. There is a hotfix available.

Thanks for the advice. I installed the hotfix--unfortunately it did not help.
When I try to open the old Publisher file, I get and error # of 1100930
(after I ctrl-shift-I). Is there anyway to download the older version of
Publisher (that I used to have, some 4 computers ago)?

I'm afraid not. As the post said earlier there is no way you will be able to
open Publisher 2.0 files because of security issues.
If these files are important to you I'd be glad to convert them for you. I still
have Publisher 2.0, 95 & 97 installed on different computers.
