Can't rebuild Entourage X database

I recently took a job where all email and calendar events are kept on an
Windows 2000 Exchange server. I'm using my TiBook with Office X to access my
email, but have been unable to rebuild my database for the last two weeks or
so. When I start Entourage X with the option key down, it says "can't
rebuild database - Quit other Office applications first". But there aren't
any other office applications running!

I've tried rebooting and immediately attempting to load/rebuild. I've
repaired permissions. I've upgraded to Mac OS X 1.3 in the meantime and
still the same problem.

Any ideas?

It's Notifications a.k.a. Microsoft Database daemon.
