Can't receive mail

Barryb

I've been using Entourage for about a year on my Mac without a
problem. All of a sudden I can't receive messages although I can send
them. Settings appear to be correct.

What happens when you try?

Send responses to the relevant news group rather than to me, as
E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my very hungry SPAM
filter. Due to Google's refusal to prevent spammers from posting
messages through their servers, I often ignore posts from Google
Groups. Use a real news client if you want me to see your posts.

I'm sorry. I thought this was a newsgroup. I guess I'm not entirely
sure of what I should do.

Well the question I asked is:

What happens when you try [to receive messages]?

So start by answering this question.

You can help us help you by explaining exactly what it is you have tried
to do, and what errors or results you've encountered.
I'm sorry.  I thought this was a newsgroup.

Huh?  This *is* a news group.

Apparently you read my signature and thought it was directed to you
personally - that's not the case. Just as with email, posts to Usenet
can have signatures. Usually signatures are at the bottom of a message
and are separated from the content of the message by a "-- " line. As
you will see below, my signature is appended to every message I post to
all news groups - so it's not directed to you personally.

Note that while I do filter out Google Groups posts on other news
groups, I do view them in *this* particular news group, which is why I
saw and responded to your post.  ; )

Answering the question: what happens when I try?

Essentially nothing. Whn I log in it used to retrieve my mail. Now
nothing happens. Also, nothing happens when I click send & receive.

I'm assuming you can use your browser to connect to the internet? This
verifies your connection to your ISP is OK.

Have you checked your Schedules to be sure they are set correctly?
Have you checked your Network setting in System Preferences?
If you enter the account info into Apple Mail, does it work?
If you create a new Identity in Entourage and enter account info, does it
work?
Have you created a new User in System Preferences to test in a clean
environment?
What does the Progress window show when you try to connect? Do you get an
error?
In the lower right corner, do you see a yellow icon indicating an error log?
What does the error say?

Normally, you get some kind of error. It's strange you are not getting some
kind of feedback.

Send & Receive Basics:

1. If you can receive but not send then you have a bad SMTP configuration
2. If you can send but not receive you have a bad POP or IMAP configuration

You can try re-entering info.
You can delete account and create a new one.
Using copy/paste can result in an extra space being added. Type carefully.
Check your Keychain for corruption.

I had this happen to me yesterday. I did this and it fixed my inbox.
Right click on the Inbox and select Folder Properties. Click on
"Empty Cache". Now everything works again! I was freaking out
because I was thinking I'd have to go back to using Outlook on a
Windows PC.

I got the same thing for couple of days now, it really drives me mad.
Emptying cache seems to help (no mention spending hours downloading gigs of
my mail from exchange).
