Can't repair/uninstall Office XP

Brian

I cannot repair nor uninstall Office XP. I get a Windows Installer message
saying, "This patch package cannot be opened.........."
There is a reference to this problem on the MS Support site and it says
there is a registry clean-up tool. However, they also say that tool does not
work with Windows XP.
Can anyone offer an alternative proposal?

These issues are probably more common than you think. I pasted the "This
patch" message into Google and was surprised at how many instances
appeared - not that any of them produced the answer to how to fix it.

In another newsgroup, someone pointed me to this site:

http://www.computing.net/office/wwwboard/forum/1342.html

I have not yet tried the registry edit that is suggested there because it
involves deleting a number of "patches". I followed the "Find" procedure
suggested and found seven folders marked "Patches" as opposed to the three
found by the poster. Without a clearer identification of the origin of those
patches, I am nervous about changing the registry.

Brian, I followed your thread and tried the advice given,
it worked perfect for me. If you are nervous about
editing the system registry do 2 things first
1) create a restore point first by using the system
restore wizard
2) backup the registry before editing (export the
registry to a new name).

If you need any further information you can email me at
(e-mail address removed)

Thanks for the lead
