can't send E-mail--SMTP service requires secure connection

I just set up an E-mail account on Entourage for my sbcglobal.net E-
mail address. However, I was unable to send mail from that account as
I kept getting the error message that the server is unable to send E-
mail from a secure connection (error 17982). I then went into the
advance options under sending E-mail and I unchecked the first option--
SMTP SERVICE REQUIRES SECURE CONNECTION. After doing this I could
successfully send E-mails.

Are there any problems with my unchecking this box? What security do
I sacrifice, if any?

The login and password are sent in clear text between your machine and
the SMTP server.
The problem is that if the server doesn't support secure connection, you
simply don't have any other option.....
