Can't send email - Charter

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Email Client: pop

All of a sudden (today) I cannot send email through Entourage. I have no problem receiving, but cannot send. This is a brand new problem. I can send through Charter webmail, but not Entourage.

Here is the error I get: Error -3259. An operation on the server timed out. The server may be down, overloaded, or there may be too much net traffic.

Charter does support Entourage.

Any "idiot proof" advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I'm not that savvy about net/web stuff so simple instructions, also greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Well it could be a couple of things, but it all points the finger to the
SMTP server.
- it could be that the server is having difficulties (that wouldn't be
surprising for Charter.... I've often had difficulties with them myself)
- it could be that they have changed some settings for their server.
Check back on their Help page for the configuration settings for any
e-mail client and look for the required SMTP settings. Extrapolating to
Entourage shouldn't be too hard.

The phrasing of the error message tends to indiocate that it could be
option number 1, but you never know, they might have migrated to new
servers on a different address and checking back the settings never
hurts,

I have no idea why, but when I went into my account settings and changed them from "pop.charter.net" and "smtp.charter.net" to "mail.charter.net" that did the trick. And that's what I care about! Thank you!

It appears that I was in error, however, in saying they support Entourage. They support Eudora and Outlook Express. However, my Entourage has worked from day one and still works, usually.

It's not that they don't support Entourage working. They just don't support
the software setup. OE usually has similar enough settings you can use it as
a guide.
