Can't send mail over open wireless network

when i am on the road and connecting through an open wireless network,
i can get mail effortlessly but i can't send. i have three accounts
with three different smtp servers and the problem exists for all of
them. they require no special authentication. they work perfectly on
my home wireless and on some other open wireless networks. why does it
work sometimes and not others?

thank you for your response. i had no idea i had an smtp server on my
laptop but i am interested in finding out how to set it up. i did a
google search but haven't been able to find anything. can you point me
in the right direction?
