Can't send mail via Entourage, but can with Apple Mail

I've just gone through the hassle of starting fresh with a new Entourage
database after discovering my old one was corrupted beyond repair. At first
my new database would let me send mail, but it was rather flakey. Now I
can't send at all. I've tested the same settings in Apple Mail and it works
fine. I've tried rebuilding my database at both levels, to no avail. I'm
about ready to punt and switch over to Apple mail. Any suggestions?

What happens when you try? Please be specific.

I've got five messages in my out box now. Four of them generate messages
starting "A message in your Outbox could not be sent using account
"Verizon." The server did not recognize the recipients or the server refuses
to alloy you to send mail." With the explanation that relaying is not
allowed. The recipient domains range from Hotmail to us.ibm.com.

The middle error message says "Mail could not be sent using the account"
with the explanation " Mail Error. The server did not understand the
request." That was for the message I was trying to send to someone on the
same service as me (Verizon.net).

This usually means that you are trying to use an outgoing SMTP server that
you don't have permission to use. You should either use the SMTP server
belonging to the service to which you are connected, or make sure you are
properly authenticated for the SMTP server you're trying to use.

You may need to fiddle with the authentication settings to get them to work.

Verizon has some information about SMTP configurations on their web site at
<http://www2.verizon.net/announcements/smtp.asp>.

Strange thing is, though, that the same settings work fine in Apple Mail,
and they worked fine in Entourage before the database switch/repairs.

I am also getting a similar error message from Entourage. I could
send outgoing mail just fine until a couple of days. The SMTP
setting appears to be correct.

Try changing your Outgoing settings to anything, sending mail (which
may fail), and then change your settings back to what they should be.
This may clear out any corruption that's causing problems.

One solution that normally works is to do two send and receives back
to back, a number of commercial email servers use an alternative to
SMTP auth that will only allow you to send mail if you've recently
(within a few minutes) logged in via POP3. The first send and receive
will attempt to send and fail, then will login via POP3. The second
send and receive will the try and send and be sucessful because the
server recognizes that the user was logged in recently.

I think (this is a guess) that Entourage does the send first, whereas
Mail does the receive first.

This has worked for me when I've had this problem.

Good luck.

The plot thickens a bit. A couple of days ago my mail started working again,
but not through Verizon. I still have an ISP that I don't connect through. I
had to change identities to track down a missing address and the problems
returned once I came back to my original identity. I think there's something
wrong with changing identities. When I first tried to switch back to my good
database Entourage hung up. I had to force quit. I manually deleted the old
identity file to get back to my good one and I couldn't send mail when it
relaunched. I just finished restarting and it's working again.

Is the identity switching a known problem?
