Can't Send Missing SMTP Authentication

Here is a new one. I upgraded my G5 to OSX Panther and now I can't
send mail via SMTP to my Exchange server from Entourage. When I check
my account setup the option to enable SMTP Authentication is there but
the fields to enter in your username and password are gone and no
radio buttion to select between use existing or enter in new username
and password. Anyone know how to get this setting back.

Thanks,

Aaron

Those options don't appear for Exchange accounts. Entourage automatically
sends the appropriate login information based on the information present in
the "Account Settings" tab.

If you need to use a custom username/password, you need to set up a regular
IMAP account.

Thanks Mickey. That is very strange then. I thought I remebered that
setting being under the exchange server setup. I still have the same
problem though and that is I can no longer send mail through my
exchange smtp server which I was able to do before installing OS X
Panther. I get the dreaded -3280 error about failure to connect. I
can send mail through this server from my Windows machine with smtp
authentication with no problem so I know that it can't be the server.
I also can send mail through another smtp server that does not require
authentication from Entourage. I'm also not using a custom username
and password. Currently I can receive fine from the same Exchange
server.

Any suggestions would be great. I guess this is what I get for trying
new software as soon as it comes out.

Here is some more follow-up info on the problem and it definitely lies
someplace on the client side and here is why I think the client is the
problem.

1. When running a TCPFlow session and observing traffic going to this
particular Exchange server on the LAN and the same IP subnet there is
no attempt even made by Entourage to connect to the SMTP to send mail.
This includes sending mail with SMTP authentication turned on or off.
It does not matter no SMTP traffic is sent to this server at all.
Just to note this is the same server running Exchange that I'm able to
receive mail, contacts, and calendar fine by DNS or IP.

2. To complicate things I tried using a different SMTP server that is
offsite and does not require SMTP Authentication. I fired up TCPFlow
and observed the session and guess what. I can send mail with no
errors and I can see the SMTP traffic from my interface to the IP of
this offsite SMTP server.

If someone can figure this one out they deserve an award. If I fix I
will post for others can fix there similar issues.

Thanks,

Aaron

Aaron,

I think I am having similar problems. I had a network guy in to take a look
at it and he duplicated the problem using Outlook Express on his PC. He said
it had something to do with Entourage actually trying to send using IMAP
rather than SMTP.

I don't know if that will help you or not. If you do find a solution, please
post it. I'd like to switch to Entourage so I don't have to live in two Oss
all the time...

Either you misunderstood him or he doesn't know what he's talking about.
Entourage only uses SMTP to send mail for both POP and IMAP accounts.
