Can't setup Exchange--IMAP issues

I was so excited to get news of the Exchange patch for Entourage, and
get out of the "Classic" world. But it is not working for us! And
even our IT guy does not know why.

Whenever I try to set up an account using the Account Setup Assistant,
it doesn't work...it says "Entourage could not detect the following
account settings: - Name, - E-mail address, - Exchange server, -
Free/Busy server, - Directory server".

When I try to "Configure account manually", I still can not get it to
work. After exiting setup, when it tries to connect to our exchange
server, it comes back with the error message "An error occurred on the
IMAP server. The specified server could not be found. Error: -3170".

Does anyone know what I can try to get this error to stop, and connect
to our Exchange server?

We actually do not even use the email portion of Exchange ... we just
use Outlook for Calendar, Contacts, & Tasks, and we handle our email
on the individual computers. I would love to know if there is some
way to bypass the whole email portion of it, as I think this is what
is causing my problems (we have been able to with the Windows Outlook
2000 and with the Mac Outlook).

Thanks!

It does not sound like your Exchange account is enabled for the IMAP
protocol or Exchange is not set up correctly for IMAP connectivity. If you
have an Outlook for Windows client available, see if you can connect to your
Exchange mailbox via IMAP. If not, you probably need to tshoot this from the
Exchange side first. Once you get IMAP working on the server, then the
Entourage client should start to work.

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much, Greg! Yes, it is not working for the Windows-based
systems either. We haven't needed any email features, so it hasn't
been a problem...until now, with Entourage's version requiring it.

Unfortunately, our IT person is not as well versed in the Exchange
side of things as we would like; he is not sure where specifically to
check to ensure that it is set up properly on Exchange. According to
him, every area he has looked in on the server seems to indicate that
things are set up correctly. Can you guide him as to what to look for
to make sure it IS properly connected?

Some things to check:
Is your Exchange server version 2000 SP2 or greater? 5.5 will NOT work.
Is WebDAV enabled? Can you use Outlook Web Access in IE to view your data?

What is not configured properly if the calendar is synching properly, but
the contacts are not?

I had the same problem when I tried to set up entourage from home. The
problem was caused by a firewall preventing entourage from talking to the
server. When I got to my office setup worked....sort of (still had to
manually configure a few things).

Nothing is syncing properly ... the calendar, the contacts, the tasks
... they are all showing up only as emails under the Exchange account
under the "Mail" area. We are using Windows Server and Exchange
Server 2000 ... the calendar, contacts, and tasks are all under public
folders. I hear this might be a problem, but if that really is the
problem, I do not understand why? That seems the logical place where
they would be placed for public (exchange) use.

The reason why is Entourage uses IMAP for getting email, so it treats items
in all Public Folders as mail messages. It has special code to use WebDAV to
access your Exchange account's Calendar and Contacts.

That sounds very odd as the calendar and contact sync use the exact same
code. It could just be a matter of time before you events start showing up.
Also, entourage expects your calendar to be at the root level of your
exchange account.
