Can't transfer identity from Entourage X to Entourage 2004

I copied the Identity folder from the Entourage X installation on my old G3
and put it into the Office Identities folder of the Entourage 2004
installation on the new G5. Then I opened Entourage 2004 and tried to switch
identities (I'd renamed the G3's identity to avoid any conflicts). I get the
message that "Entourage cannot access your data. To attempt to fix the
problem, rebuild your database" and up pops the Database Utility.

First, I tried highlighting the identity in the list and selected 'Verify
database integrity' and clicked 'Contine.' I get:

=====================
"An error occurred while attempting to verify your database. The end of file
was reached."
=====================

So, I highlighted the G3 identity again, this time selected 'Rebuild
database' and clicked 'Continue'. The utility goes to work - progress bar
proceeding as you'd expect - and, at the end, it says:

=====================
"Rebuild started on "G3 Identity" at 11/10/04 1:32 PM. Your database was
successfully rebuilt."
=====================

I still can't switch identities or verify the integrity of either the
original G3 identity or the backed up version.

Can anyone help me figure out how to transfer all of my mail, etc. to the
new computer? The rules and signatures - being individual files - copied
over just fine and have been integrated into Entourage 2004's default
identity but I don't have access to my messages, folder structure, etc.

Hi,

Try importing mail in Entourage 2004. Goto Entourage menu and select import.
In the import screen select "Import Information from a program" & click on
next, select Microsoft Entourage X & follow the instruction.

Hope this resolves your issue.

Thanks, Prasanna.

I would have done that straightaway except that Entourage X is installed on
the old G3 while Entourage 2004 is installed on the G5. Could this be done
if I were to network the two computers together?

The easiest way to do this is to:

1) Install Entourage X on the G5 (it can be removed later)
2) Make sure Entourage 2004 is quit completely and open Entourage X to
create the necessary file path. Then quit Entourage X.
3) Copy the Indentity from Entourage X on the G3 to the G-5
4) Place the existing indentity in the Home>Documents>Microsoft User
Data>Office X Idenitities folder. (Move the empty Main Identity that
Entourage automatically creates to the trash)
5) Hold down the option key and launch Entourage X to rebuild the
existing identity.
6) Make sure that you can see the existing data in Entourage X.
7) Quit Entourage X and open Entourage2004 and do the import.
8) Remove Entourage X using the removal tool located in the Value
Pack.

Entourage will not import over a network and it does need to see the
previous version during the import which is why Entourage X needs to
be installed.

Hey, thanks for the detailed breakdown - I'll bet even I can follow those
directions without too much difficulty! lol

Okay, now. I did this step by step with one exception: the "switch identity"
dialogue seems to see only what's in the Office 2004 Identities folder with
no option to search through other directories. So, after opening Entourage X
and being able to see all of my messages and everything else and then
shutting it down, I copied the Entourage X identity to the Office 2004
Identities folder.

When I went to switch identities there was a longer wait this time and I
thought "WOO HOO! It's working!" but then got the same answer as before and,
while I could at least verify the database this time around, I still
couldn't import it after rebuilding.

What's more....Entourage X doesn't seem to be liking OS X 10.3.5 too much.
I'm getting periodic errors that manifest themselves in wonky interface
things like buttons going completely gray and nothing at all responding.

Hmmmmm...

Any ideas?

Thanks, again!

You can't copy your Entourage X identities to the Office 2004 Identities
folder!!!! You have to import your messages from Entourage X into Entourage
2004.

You can have both the Office 2004 Identities folder and the Office X
Identities folder in the Microsoft User Data folder. This allows you to
switch back and forth between Entourage 2004 and Entourage X.

Entourage X database has to be imported into the new format for Entourage
2004. It will not work.

The problem isn't Entourage. The way you are moving things around in
Entourage was incorrect. I don't know what else you have moved around. The
best way to fix this would be to do an Archive and Install. Directions here:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/glossary/archive_install.html>

If you select to check Preserve Users and Network Settings when you select
Archive & Install, and continue to have problems you will need to install
without this setting. You'll have to re-enter some info, but you will have a
clean system.

The Database format for Entourage 2004 is improved over the format used in
Entourage X. Unfortunately, the two are not interchangeable. To access
data from an Entourage X identity in Entourage 2004, just go to File >
Import, choose to import information from a program (Microsoft Entourage X),
and follow the prompts.

Ah-HAAAAA! So simple and yet...

When I looked at the File>Import function before, I got so focused in on the
fact that Entourage was specified by name in the first option (import
information from an Entourage archive) that I didn't even bother looking at
the other options. Doh!

Thanks, Mickey!
