Can't "Work Online" with Exchange Server

K

Kim

Whenever I work "online" with our exchange server, I get the spinning wheel
as soon as Entourage is opened.

I can quickly select the "Work Offline" option before it stops responding,
and if I continue to work offline it works okay - I just have to check mail
manually, etc.

If I log into exchange webmail and delete half my emails, then do an
advanced rebuild - it fixes the problem, but only for a short while.

I have tried typical, advanced rebuilds, re-installing the software,
rebuilding permissions, etc. It happens on OSX 10.2.8 and 10.3.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Kim

What a pain :-\ I know the first time you connect to Exchange the
application goes into spinning beachball for quite a while as it
actually synchs the data (address book and calendar). Did you let
Entourage do that all the way ??

Do you sync address book and calendar ?? and if yes, are they large ??

Thanks for the reply Corentin,

Yep - even left it for 10+ minutes to see if it would 'come right', without
any luck.

The Celendar is sync'd from the exchange server, but there isnt all that
much in there - probably a dozen or so apointments at the most. My entire
exchange mailbox is 190mb (3562 items).

Today it is working okay - I have deleted quite a few emails (using
webmail) - but its just a matter of time for it to start acting up again (as
it has done in the past).

Let me know if you have any other ideas...

It took muuuuchhh longer for me... at least 30 minutes :-\

That's a large mailbox to have on an Exchange server. I'm limited to
40MB and it's already quite large.
That might explain some of the spinning beachballs.

I think the issue is the size of the mailbox. It takes for ever for
Entourage to sync. The fact that it now works after deleting mails is a
sign... I've learnt to archive my old e-mails on the computer and only
keep recent ones on the Exchange server.
I can't think of any other workarounds.

And while it is "spinning" Entourage stops responding completely? Maybe I
will leave it longer next time.

Hmm, damn. We have users here that have mailboxes up to 1gb in size - most
users are with Outlook and it has never been a problem. It is a shame
Entourage will probably never be a true Exchange client like on the PC :(

Ok, thanks. I will keep cleaning out my mail box and hope that keeps things
trouble-free.

Cheers,

You might manage to get pass it by setting up Entourage not to
systematically download the mails. You can get it to get the headers
only and download the mail if it needs to be read. That woudl probably
speed up the process tremendously.

Where is the setting for that? I remember seeing that once before but cannot
find it now.
