Categories and projects disappear

All of my categories disappear when I rebuild the database. This has
happened a few times in the past couple of months and it takes a lot of work
to go back into the messages, calendars, contacts, etc. and re-establish the
categories with each item.

For example, I have a simple category called "Birthdays" which I associate
with a calendar entry for someone's birthday. When the database gets
rebuilt, those associations disappear completely. This is also true for
e-mail messages.

Projects, on the other hand: only some of these associations disappear.
Some messages and calendar items keep their project associations and others
do not.

I am using Entourage 2004, fully updated. Mac PowerBook G4 1.5 GHz with OSX
10.4.5. We synch to an exchange server.

Any advice on how to keep my categories intact?

Thank you for your help.

Yes - don't sync to an Exchange server. You're actually getting Exchange
mail, events and contacts synching back from Outlook/Exchange, where
categories are not synced. Tasks, notes and projects (as such) do not sync
to Exchange, they are local (although the messages, events and contacts in
the project might be Exchange and will lose their categories). So those
don't lose categories - the cache is rebuilt. If you didn't have Exchange,
or made tour calendar events and your contacts in the local Calendar and
Address Book "On My Computer" you would not lose categories.

If you _really_ want the categories, you could get my shareware scripts
Export-Import Entourage. Before rebuilding, export all contacts and events
using the scripts. After rebuilding. delete all your contacts and events (go
into "All Events" calendar view, select all, and delete). Wait a while for
the deletions to sync to Exchange. Then import the exported text files using
my scripts. They will be recreated with categories, and will soon populate
Exchange again too. You can get Export-Import Entourage at

Thank you for your reply. It is difficult to not synch with the Exchange
server because that it is corporate policy.

In my opinion, the fact that Categories, et al, do not sync is a major flaw
with Entourage. I will try using your scripts...thank you for writing them
and posting them.
