CD Prompt & error 1706

User has Office XP Standard SP2. Excel will not open. It keeps wanting to
install something from CD but user can't find original CD. Then it gives
error 1706.

The wierd thing is that the other Office apps (Word, Outlook, Powerpoint)
all open and work fine... just Excel is messed up.

This was probably triggered by a problem with an Outlook data file which
wouldn't load quickly and on one of the attempts to open it there was a
prompt "do you want to run Detect & Repair?". User said yes, but then it
asked for CD, which they didn't have, so they cancelled.

I've told them to try to find the CD (easiest/safest solution) but is there
another way around this? Is there someway to reset Excel (some file?
registry key?) so that it will forget about trying to install the feature?

I considered having them apply SP3 via Office Update online but then I
hesitated because I wasn't sure if that might also require them to have
original CD.

Any advice would be much appreciated! (User is really hosed without Excel)
