What does close a CD-R mean? After backing up on a CD-R I could not pull up
the information on someone else's computer and they said I did not close the
CD-R.

I'd assume he means that you need to finalize the CD. If you do that, no further writing will be possible.

Finalizing a CD has nothing to do with Microsoft Office.
