Cell shows formula not value, why?

I occaisionally have an error when I type in a formula like:
=sheet1!A1

I want the value of cell A1 on sheet1 to be displyed but all I get is the
typed text..."=sheet1!A1"

Its only associated with one cell! The cell above has a similar formula and
displays the value. I've copied & pasted special, formats (from a cell that
displays values)...no change!

I've tried using F9 to calculate now!

Hi
some ideas:
- first check that the cell is not formated as 'Text'. If it is change
it to 'General' and re-enter your formula
- second: goto 'Tools - Options - View' and uncheck 'Formulas'

The formatting is the issue...what I finally discovered is (with your help):
1) The cell had a formula already in it and the format was "text"
2) Editing the formula with the cell as "text" causes the formula to be
displayed (previously the formula was not...must have been changed from
general to text after the formula was entered?)

So, to edit the formula I changed the format from text to general then
editied the formula.
