Certificates in Entourage 2004

I managed to get set up with a free Thawte certificate so I can now sign
messages. Not sure if anyone else had fun trying to do this. I could not get
one via safari, but Netscape worked ok. Then I exported it from Netscape and
imported it into Entourage. I can now sign my e-mails. :)

I did that as well. I bought mine from Verisign. Safari worked. It
downloaded it to my desktop and the OS Keychain automatically opened to
import it. I had to import it into three accounts: user, MS intermediate (or
something like that), and System. When I just installed it in the user, it
would work, but it would not verify the trust. Everything else was green.
Once I imported into all three accounts via Mac OS Keychain, all green
checkmarks appear when I "view details" of the certificate.

I love it!

Thawte gives them out for free. Is there something in Verisign ones that is
better, and worth paying for?

Probably not, but I rather do business with a name I already know. I see
Verisign everywhere, and I'm a firm believer in that you get what you pay
for.

When I was searching for a CA, I had never even heard of Thawte. I'm not
saying they aren't good, or worth anything, just that I had never heard of
them. I went straight for the company I knew, and see every time I do
transactions on the web.

The free Thawte certs are limited in that you cannot have your own username
- you have to have "Thawte FreeMail Member" as the username.

Also, to gain any level of trust, you have to have your certificate (and
identity) 'notarised' by some accredited person (or, more accurately,
people), who may, and often do, charge you for the privilege.

Thanks for the info Barry. Once gain, I would put that into the "you get
what you pay for" category. ;-)

I often was victim to that, and have grown very suspicious of anything that
is "free."

$14.95 for the one I bought from Verisign seemed like a reasonable price to
me.

Peace,
