Changing Email carriers and saving old emails

I recently changed my email from pop to imap. I want to keep my old
emails for reference. If I delete the old email account will this
erase my old emails? How can I keep them intact?

E-mails stored in folder "on my computer" shoudl be preserved even if
you delete an account. In your case (POP is stored locally) it
shouldn't be a problem
