Chaotic IMAP Message list

B

Bill Weylock

I just decided to try reading my yahoo mail through Entourage.

There is no problem getting the mail, but trying to read it is beyond
frustrating.

Honestly, I can¹t really tell what¹s happening. All I know is that at least
60% of the time when I click on a message to view it in the preview pane, it
disappears from under my cursor and another message displays instead. Often
I have trouble even finding the original message.

It seems to be something like the bug I encounter reading newsgroup messages
with long subject lines, and I¹m sure that it¹s either that same bug or a
close relative.

The results, though, are much worse. In the newsgroups, the message slips
away, but I can find it with no problem, and it¹s under a thread. Here, it¹s
just a mess.

I tried setting the mailbox to the same display setting I use for this
group: Group by subject, groups sort by Sent, newest on top, items by oldest
sent on top, expanded.

Still a mess.

Any ideas.?

I¹m viewing this, by the way, from the account folder rather than from a
collecting mailbox.

Oh, and the mail is all coming from a yahoo group.

Thanks!

Best,

- Bill

Do a compact of the database. If that doesn't fix it (but it should) do a
rebuild. For both, hold down Option key when launching Entourage.

Thanks, Paul!

I was busy and didn¹t read carefully so I thought you were advocating the
more complete rebuild solution.

That¹s why it took me a little longer than usual to thank you for the
advice.

Totally fixed.

Is there a FAQ, or can you offer a thumbnail explanation of what happened
and why a compact would fix it?

Not that important, but I¹m a curious sort.

Thanks again. It¹s totally cured.

Best,

- Bill

Compact - which used to be known as "Typical Rebuild" - copies the various
bits of the database which are scattered about on your hard disk into a new
contiguous area of the HD. The out-of-order lists are due to something the
developers once referred to as a "bubble" and relate to some blip connected
with a minor gap in the blocks on the disk - maybe unwriteable, maybe just a
break at an unfortunate location in the database. I don't know the real
details. Anyway, the copying to a new area of the disk fixes the problem.
It's pretty scary when you first hit this one, and nice when it fixes
itself.

If you see just a mis-ordered list (no jumping about) or undeletable
messages in a single IMAP folder, all you usually need is a "Repair Message
List" in contextual menu on right-click (control-click) on the folder, or
press opt-cmd-L.

Great stuff. Thanks for the explanation.

I¹m in the laborious process of optimizing all of my drives. Today I¹m
building a clone so I can optimize the ATA internal drive. Maybe that will
help something, but sounds like a vaguely allied but separate issue.

Anyway, much appreciated.

I have another issue now, but I¹ll avoid thread drift and start a new one.
