I receive messages with different character sets regularly. In order to
read properly, I change to the appropriate set manually. Is there any way
to automate this task with rule and/or applescript? Thanks.

If the information necessary was in the headers as it should be, then the
default setting should have picked it up.

However, if the ails are consistently from the same people, you could set up
a mail rule to change the character set for messages from that person to the
desired character set as they arrive. If there are a lot of people affected,
assign them all a category in the address book, and change your rule to look
for messages in that category.
