Character Spacing

I

ian

Hi

I'm using the latest version of Entourage on a PowerBook G4. This
morning two issues came up with regard to character spacing.

Firstly, in the bottom frame of the Entourage window I get something
like this:

750 ite ms d ispl
Sc ye...

and so on across the bottom of the frame with this huge spacing
between characters.

Secondly, when I select an email address from my Address Book a
similar thing happens:

A
n
d r
e

to such an extent that my laptop then freezes.

I've tried reinstalling Office and updated with the latest version.

Anyone with idea of what's going on here?

This garbled text could be caused by corrupted preferences. Quit Entourage,
then see if deleting the following files

* Tasman Browser.cache
* com.microsoft.browserfont.cache (both in [your user
account]/Library/Caches)

solves the problem. If it doesn't, then these might be the early symptoms of
database corruption, so by all means, post back if the problem persists.

You've got a bad font in your system. To fix it:

1. Run /Applications/Font Book.
2. Select all items in the Font list.
3. From the Font Book menu bar, select File > Validate Fonts.
4. Uncheck all fonts with "Serious problems".

Wow good tip there. Is this a known issue? The only font problem I've
ever seen with Entourage has been corrupted font files.

Hi JR,

it is indeed a known issue. Entourage 2004 uses the Tasman rendering engine
to display e-mails (the same engine that was also used in the now defunct
Internet Explorer for Mac), and if the Tasman caches corrupt, e-mails do no
longer display correctly in Entourage.

Would this be the same cause for a problem that has plagued Entourage 2004
from the off: Namely, when HTML email is used, Entourage will place odd
spaces into text so that a line like:

The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over The Lazy Dog

Will be received as:

The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over The Lazy Dog

Note that the original email in my Sent Items does not have these extra
spaces, but I get to see them when my email is quoted back at me. As it
makes me look as if I'm careless with my typing, I now send all messages as
plain text.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul,

if the answer looks alright in your Sent Items folder, then this might be
modified by your recipients' e-mail clients. Normally, if the Tasman cache
is corrupted, it only affects the *display* of messages, not the encoding.
At the same time, it can't hurt to delete these files (Entourage will
automatically create new ones), and Entourage could indeed display the
incoming messages wrongly. Give it a try, but don't expect it to fix the
problem. Even though it might actually do that...

Michel,

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it hasn't made any difference.
Although in this instance, the extra spaces were introduced only after the
mail had been returned from a Windows Outlook client -and thinking on this
some more, that may indeed be the common factor. Food for thought there...

Thanks again,

Paul

This problem has reappeared. I've removed the Tasman cache once again,
but this time it didn't solve the problem.

Any more ideas?

P.S. I should also mention that the text in some formatted emails is
also corrupted.

Hi

After reinstalling Entourage, cleaning up the database and following
your instructions once again...problem solved!

Thanks once again.
